True North Dental Care.
Launching with momentum, positioned for long-term growth.

Opening, with soft launch first

Smithfield is where the Northern Beaches shop. It is a busy dental market, so the practice has to win on experience, convenience and visibility.

Smithfield is the commercial heart of Cairns' Northern Beaches. Smithfield Shopping Centre is the only sub-regional centre north of Cairns, anchored by Coles, Woolworths, Kmart and Event Cinemas with 125+ specialty stores, and its owners describe a broader catchment of more than 120,000 residents. The Trinity Beach to Smithfield area has grown by around 70% since 2011 and remains one of the region's main growth corridors. This is not an under-serviced suburb: there are at least five private practices within a few minutes. The opportunity is to be the clear modern, independent choice for families who want convenience, technology and continuity of care.

The location advantage

Across the street from the centre every Northern Beaches household already drives to. Ten on-site car spaces, plenty of street parking and an accessible building mean no walking a family through a shopping centre for a check-up. Neighbours include a vet and a fit-out business, with Cairns Private Vault in the same secure complex.

The technology story

A Vatech Green X imaging system (panoramic OPG, 3D cone beam CT and optional ceph in one unit) plus new Adec chairs. Few general practices can show patients a 3D scan in the chair. It is a genuine, visual point of difference for cosmetic, restorative and future orthodontic cases.

The timing

Bookings open in January, soft launch with friends and family, then full opening in February or early March. That gives us roughly eight weeks to build the website, Google Business Profile and waitlist before the first public booking. The same plan then scales with the practice as it grows, including orthodontics.

Younger than Queensland, family-heavy, mortgage-paying and still growing.

Figures below are ABS Census 2021 for the suburb of Smithfield unless noted, with population estimates for the wider Trinity Beach to Smithfield area. The practical catchment runs from Caravonica and Redlynch up the coast to Trinity Park, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove, plus Yorkeys Knob and Holloways Beach. The Northern Beaches suburbs alone held 25,000+ residents at the last Census.

Where True North's patients live, and who else is competing for them.

Click any pin for details and use the filters to show or hide competitor groups. The inner ring (about 4km) is the core catchment we target hardest with location pages and Google Ads. The outer ring (about 10km) takes in the Northern Beaches up to Palm Cove and down to Redlynch.

Pin positions are approximate (street level) and will be checked against Google Business Profile listings at onboarding.

Core suburbs

Smithfield, Trinity Park, Caravonica and Kamerunga. Daily shopping trips already bring these households past the door. Each gets a dedicated location page and the tightest Google Ads radius.

Northern Beaches

Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove, Yorkeys Knob and Holloways Beach. Higher household values and strong cosmetic potential. Served today by a handful of small practices, so there is room for a modern alternative.

Growth and students

Ongoing residential growth around Smithfield and Trinity Park, plus thousands of JCU students and staff next door. New movers search "dentist near me" first, which is exactly where a fresh, well-optimised profile can win.

Who already serves Smithfield, what they do well, and where True North can stand apart.

1300SMILES Smithfield

Shop 68, Smithfield Shopping Centre (directly across the road) · National group brand · General and family dentistry, oral health therapists, emergency appointments
Closest direct competitor

Strengths

  • Inside the centre itself, with high foot traffic and free centre parking
  • Multiple clinicians plus oral health therapists, so strong appointment availability
  • Extended Thursday evening hours
  • Afterpay, Zip and Humm payment options promoted
  • 10% discount for JCU students and staff

Weaknesses

  • Group brand and centrally run marketing, so less personal, local identity
  • Patients park and walk through a busy centre to reach the clinic
  • A larger rotating team can make it harder to see the same dentist each visit

Opportunities (for them)

  • Group budget allows them to scale Google Ads quickly if a new competitor appears
  • Centre activations and promotions to defend their position

Threats (to them, our angle)

  • An independent, owner-led practice across the road offering continuity of care
  • Easier on-site parking and an accessible standalone entry
  • 3D imaging and a cosmetic focus (veneers, whitening) as visible differentiators

Smithfield Dental

Suite 1, 12 Danbulan Street, Smithfield · Established multi-dentist private practice, around six dentists listed · Describes itself as modern and digitally driven
Strong established player

Strengths

  • Large team and long local history, with a deep patient base
  • Broad service list including implants
  • Positive public reviews mentioning same-day emergency help

Weaknesses

  • Recruiting dentists through 2026, which suggests demand is running ahead of capacity
  • Larger team model, so continuity with one dentist is harder to promise

Opportunities (for them)

  • Established reputation and review base will keep them strong in Google Maps

Threats (to them, our angle)

  • If wait times grow, new patients look for a practice that can see them this week. True North opens with spare capacity
  • New-build fit-out and on-site parking versus an established suite

Stanton Place Dental (Dr Michael Sutherland)

Unit 10, 2-4 Stanton Road, Smithfield · Locally owned, family operated since 1997 · Also listed as Dental Care Smithfield
Loyal base, lighter digital footprint

Strengths

  • Nearly 30 years in Smithfield with strong patient loyalty
  • Locally owned, personal care, the same principal for decades

Weaknesses

  • Listed under several names across directories, which splits search visibility
  • Few public reviews on the directories we checked

Opportunities (for them)

  • A refreshed website and review program could lift them quickly

Threats (to them, our angle)

  • Families new to the area judge practices on Google first. A complete profile with photos, reviews and online booking wins those searches

Essential Dental

Shop 25, Campus Shopping Village, Faculty Close, Smithfield · Family and emergency dentistry · Listed with Saturday and Sunday morning hours
Convenience-led

Strengths

  • Weekend hours, including Sunday mornings, which very few practices offer
  • Close to JCU and the student population

Weaknesses

  • Smaller village centre location with less passing trade than the main centre
  • Limited review volume on the directories we checked

Opportunities (for them)

  • Weekend availability is a strong message for emergency and working-family searches

Threats (to them, our angle)

  • If True North offers at least one late night or Saturday session, convenience is matched while the experience and technology story is stronger

Northern Beaches and Redlynch independents

Trinity Beach Dental (Coastwatchers Shopping Centre, family owned), Clifton Family Dental (Clifton Beach), Perfect Teeth Redlynch and Redlynch Dental
Local loyalty, smaller teams

Strengths

  • Trinity Beach Dental actively targets Smithfield, Trinity Park, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove
  • Clifton Family Dental shows strong review ratings for gentle, caring treatment
  • Village-style convenience for beachside residents

Weaknesses

  • Small teams limit appointment availability
  • Generally lighter content and SEO for cosmetic and specific treatments

Opportunities (for them)

  • Hyper-local loyalty is hard to dislodge for routine check-ups

Threats (to them, our angle)

  • Beaches residents already drive to Smithfield weekly. Treatment-specific pages (veneers, whitening, dentures) capture the higher-value searches these practices do not target strongly

JCU Dental, public and specialist providers

JCU Dental clinic (McGregor Road, student clinic), Smithfield Community Health Centre dental (public, 16 Danbulan Street), Sunbird Orthodontics Smithfield (specialist orthodontist)
Different patient segments

Strengths

  • JCU and the public clinic serve price-sensitive and eligible patients at lower or no cost
  • Sunbird is a specialist orthodontic practice with no referral needed

Weaknesses

  • Student clinics run longer appointments and fixed academic calendars
  • Public waitlists can be long for non-urgent care

Opportunities (for True North)

  • Patients who outgrow student or public care become private patients, so a clear fees and payment-plan page helps
  • A respectful referral relationship with the local orthodontic specialist for complex cases

Watch-outs

  • When True North launches its own orthodontic offering, position it on the practice's own credentials and convenience. No comparison with specialist providers

True North Dental Care

8 Mount Koolmoon Street, Smithfield · 3 chairs, with room to expand · General, cosmetic, restorative, dentures, mouthguards, kids · Orthodontics planned within 12 months
Our starting position

Strengths

  • Brand-new fit-out with Adec chairs and Vatech Green X 3D imaging
  • Ten on-site car spaces, street parking and an accessible entry
  • Secure, purpose-built complex (Cat 5 build, CCTV)
  • Independent, owner-led, and a dentist with six years of local Cairns experience
  • Strong cosmetic menu: porcelain and composite veneers, in-chair and take-home whitening (Pola, Opalescence)

Weaknesses

  • No reviews, no domain history and no Google Business Profile yet
  • Health fund preferred provider applications still pending
  • No implants in-house at launch (referral pathway needed)
  • Smaller team than established competitors

Opportunities

  • Spare capacity in a market where at least one large practice is recruiting
  • Cosmetic and denture searches are under-served by local content
  • Orthodontics (braces and aligners) as a second growth wave
  • Cross-promotion with complex neighbours and local clubs (sports mouthguards)

Threats

  • Competitors with established review bases dominate the Google Maps pack early on
  • A group competitor can lift ad spend in response
  • Opening during the wet season can affect early foot traffic
  • Any launch-timing constraints identified in legal review (see section 08)

Observations come from public websites and directories as at November 2026 and will be refreshed with live Google review counts and rankings at onboarding.

The searches worth owning, and roughly how often they happen.

Indicative monthly search volumes for the Cairns market, to be validated in Google Keyword Planner at kick-off. Cairns-wide terms carry the volume; suburb and treatment terms carry the intent. "Near me" searches are additional and resolve by the searcher's location, which is why the Google Business Profile matters so much.

A new domain against established practices: so we start with what we can win fastest.

New websites usually take three to six months to earn Google's trust. Competitors here have years of history and reviews, so the SEO plan leans on the levers a new practice can move quickly: Google Business Profile, treatment-specific pages, location pages and review velocity.

Foundation (before bookings open)

  • Website build: fast, mobile-first site with service pages for general, cosmetic, veneers, whitening, restorative, dentures, mouthguards and kids, plus fees, health funds and online booking.
  • Technology page: Green X 3D imaging and Adec chairs explained in plain English, with photos of the real surgery.
  • Location pages: written properly for Smithfield, Trinity Park, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove, Yorkeys Knob and Redlynch.
  • Google Business Profile: set up and verified as early as the premises allow, with an opening date, services and fit-out photos.
  • Technical SEO: schema (Dentist, LocalBusiness, FAQ), Core Web Vitals, Search Console, GA4 and call tracking from day one.

Momentum (from opening)

  • Review engine: a simple post-visit request to every genuine patient from the first day of trading. In this market, the Google Maps pack is won on review count and recency.
  • Citations: consistent name, address and phone across Healthdirect, HotDoc or HealthEngine, Yellow Pages, Localsearch and dental directories.
  • Monthly content: articles for local questions, e.g. composite vs porcelain veneers, kids' first visit and CDBS, sports mouthguards for the footy season.
  • Health fund updates: as each preferred provider approval lands, it goes onto the site, profile and ads.
  • Orthodontics hub: built ahead of the ortho launch so it is ranking when the service starts.
  • Live reporting: rankings, calls, bookings and profile actions in your GYA dashboard.

Paid search fills chairs while SEO and reviews build.

Three chairs means we need a steady flow of the right new patients, not volume for its own sake. Google Ads gives True North first-page visibility for high-intent searches from the day bookings open, while the organic presence matures.

Campaign 1: Local new patients

"Dentist Smithfield", "dentist near me" and Northern Beaches suburb terms, targeted to the core and extended catchment. Leads with on-site parking, new practice, online booking and (once approved) health fund status.

Campaign 2: Cosmetic

Whitening and veneers (porcelain and composite) with dedicated landing pages, an AHPRA-compliant launch offer and smile-design consultation call to action. The highest value per patient at launch.

Campaign 3: Emergency and dentures

Switched on from opening. Emergency terms with call-only focus during trading hours, plus a denture campaign for an older, high-value segment competitors under-serve online.

GYA build standards for this account

  • Maximise clicks bidding, with a maximum CPC cap during launch
  • Location asset enabled, tied to the verified Google Business Profile
  • Location and demographic targeting set to the catchment above
  • Phrase and exact match keywords only
  • Multiple ad variations per ad group, tested monthly
  • Calls, forms and bookings tracked back to keyword and campaign

Every patient comes through open, public channels.

New practices opened by dentists moving on from a previous role need marketing that is clearly independent. We build these principles into the plan from day one, so growth never relies on anything that could be questioned later.

No direct approaches

No contact with patients of any previous practice, no use of any past patient information, and no messages, letters or social posts aimed at them. Patients find True North through search, maps, signage and word of mouth.

No competitor targeting

We never bid on other practices' brand names, never name other practices in ads or on the website, and never run comparative advertising.

Careful geography during launch

Paid campaigns focus on Smithfield and the Northern Beaches. If legal advice recommends it, we exclude specific suburbs from paid targeting for a set period at no real cost to results.

Legal review before bookings open

We recommend the principal's prior employment agreement is reviewed by a lawyer before public bookings open in January. The plan is sequenced so the website and brand work can proceed now, and public patient-facing activity can flex to that advice.

GYA is not a law firm and this section is not legal advice. It describes how we run marketing so that it stays clean and defensible.

From today to a full appointment book, month by month.

Tap a phase to expand it. Slower authority-building starts first, and fast demand-capture switches on when bookings can actually convert.

  • Onboarding and brand workshop: True North positioning, tone, photography plan
  • Website design on the True North domain begins: sitemap, service and location pages
  • Keyword and competitor data validated with live tools
  • Principal's employment agreement reviewed by a lawyer (recommended)
  • Booking software, phone and email set up so online booking can go live in January
  • Website launched with "Opening early 2027, bookings from January" messaging and waitlist sign-up
  • Google Business Profile created and verification started, with fit-out and equipment photos

  • Booking, reminder and follow-up flow tested end to end
  • Real photos and short video of the working surgery for the site and profile

  • Emergency and denture campaigns prepared for go-live
  • All Google Ads campaigns live, including emergency and dentures
  • Review engine running from every appointment
  • Opening announcement on the profile and website
  • Weekly optimisation through the first six weeks, then monthly

Google ad spend: set the pace of growth

Ad spend is paid directly to Google, not to GYA, and can be adjusted month to month. It is the single biggest lever on how quickly new patients start booking while SEO and reviews build. These are the three levels we would run for True North.

Steady
$1,000/mo

Visibility on core Smithfield searches through the busiest hours of the week. A measured start that builds steadily alongside SEO.

Recommended for launch
Launch
$1,500-$2,000/mo

Full coverage across Smithfield and the Northern Beaches all week, plus the cosmetic campaign. The level we recommend for the first three months, so the diary fills while reviews and rankings catch up.

Accelerate
$2,500+/mo

Adds Cairns-wide reach for whitening, veneers and dentures, and stronger emergency coverage. Best when there is spare capacity and the goal is faster growth.

What gets the best results

Marketing brings the enquiries. These five things decide how many become booked patients, and we work on them with the practice from day one.

1

Ad spend matched to capacity

Enough budget to stay visible all week, adjusted as the appointment book fills.

2

Every enquiry answered

Calls picked up, online booking live and fast follow-up on forms. This is where SmileOX helps.

3

Reviews from day one

A steady flow of genuine Google reviews is what moves a new practice up the map results.

4

A clear launch offer

A simple, AHPRA-compliant reason to book now, such as a new patient check-up and clean.

5

Health funds and trust signals

Preferred provider status, real photos of the team and surgery, published the moment they are ready.

Recommended: Website Build starting this month, with SEO + Google Ads from December so the profile, content and campaigns are ready the day bookings open. If you prefer a slower start, SEO only from December and step up to SEO + Google Ads in January works too.

Smithfield's newest practice only gets one opening.

Bookings open in January, and the work that fills them starts now. Let's lock in the launch plan.
